Experience the thrilling versatility of a helicopter with this fantastic aerial flight. Begin with a full safety briefing and a talk on fundamental flying techniques, before hopping aboard a dual-controlled Robinson R22 training helicopter with a fully qualified pilot. Feel the sheer exhilaration during a vertical take-off and once in the air, the pilot will demonstrate how this zippy craft can move, going backwards, forwards or hovering stationary. At the discretion of the pilot, take over the controls to experience the rush of flying a helicopter first-hand.

Availability: Six days per week throughout the year, from Tuesdays to Sundays (excluding the Christmas period and some public holidays). Weekends are particularly busy – book several weeks in advance. Weather: Helicopter flying is a weather dependent activity, mainly due to wind speeds and cloud base above the ground, and it’s essential that you call the venue for a weather check before setting out. Duration: The time spent in the helicopter is around 30 minutes from engines-on to engines-off. This includes warm-up, take-off and landing. Numbers On Day: This experience is held on a one-to-one basis. The only people aboard your aircraft will be you and a fully qualified pilot. The briefing is likely to be shared. Spectators: Spectators are welcome. A pair of binoculars or a camera will come in handy. Dress Code: Wear flat-soled shoes (not trainers) and loose, comfortable clothing, as the cockpit can get warm. Sunglasses are recommended all year round. Guidelines: Take the A458 Shrewsbury to Welshpool. Once there, follow the A483 ring road to Newton. At the second roundabout take the A490 to Churchstoke and the airport is 300 metres on your right. Restrictions: Minimum age is 16. The Robinson R22 helicopter has a maximum passenger weight of 17 stone (240lbs). There are no formal height restrictions. Photographic ID (ideally a passport) MUST be produced on the day or you won’t be permitted to fly. Other Info: Your flying time during this experience can count towards a Private Pilot’s Licence. To qualify for a PPL you will need a minimum of 45 hours dual control flying of which at least 10 hours must be solo.
