I couldn’t resist quoting that old time ditty as I thought of my flying experience Lodon and I didn’t even need a pilot licence of any type….and no, I didn’t try looping the loop….as for defying the ground I had my trusty real pilot to keep me in the air and stop me from plummeting downwards……..

The thought of flying a small plane fascinates me; they are so much more agile and real than a big passenger jet. Over the years I’ve taken activity days adventures like rock climbing, zip lining and indoor skydiving that would satisfy my adrenaline.  I’m always looking for something that would surpass my previous experiences. This time it’s my childhood dream come true. Flying and controlling an aircraft like a real pilot.

From the day I scheduled for an introductory flying lesson I’ve counted the days, hours, minutes and  seconds. At work, there are times when I paused and think how it would be like to fly my own aircraft. At night, I thought of the experience before I fell to sleep. I am twitching with excitement as I waited for this moment.

I didn’t know what to expect. Would I be controlling the plane alone whilst an instructor is sitting beside me and giving instructions? Would I have a full control or will just wait for the instructor to say “push this” “switch that”? Are there preparations before we take off like trying it first in computer flight simulator?

Flying Experience: An Introductory Flying Lesson

The lesson starts with a pre-flight briefing from a qualified flying instructor covering about the general information such parts of the planes, controls, mechanics and very important safety tips. Then, it’s finally time for takeoff. We climbed in and the instructor handed me head phones as he checks the controls while naming each one (GPS, radios, brakes etc).

He then guided me on how to start the plane. Strange hearing his voice over the headphone “step on the pedal”. At the back of my mind I ask “Am I really going to fly this?” and took a deep breath… Fortunately, I manage to taxi the plane to the runway with the help of my instructor a few moments later we are soaring 2000 feet above. Whilst above, he taught me how to turn, fly straight, ascend and descend the plane.

Looking through the window I got a different view of London town. While spotting buildings and trying to locate my neighborhood to spot my house the instructor suggested I take some photos. He then positions the plane so that I could take good photos.  Wow! This is the coolest and most exhilarating experience I ever had. We flew around the city for 30 minutes, and then he showed me how to get back to the airport. He took over the controls and landed the plane safely whilst explaining every step.
