Description
Climb aboard a dual controlled glider for up to 45 minutes over two flights. Alongside a skilled instructor receive a full safety briefing before take-off. Hauled mid-air (around 2,000 feet) by a light aircraft, the rope will detach and the unrestricted glider can carry on the ascent, taking in the surreal atmosphere and beautiful views of unspoilt countryside. The discretion of the pilot also allows for the trainee flyer to take over the controls and fly the glider, truly extraordinary!
Availability: Saturday, Sunday and bank holiday afternoons from Good Friday until the end of September. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance, even earlier for summer weekend dates. Weather: Gliding is weather dependent. It is crucial that you call the club for a weather check and to confirm the time of your flight between 8am and 9.30am on the day (or the day before if you’ll be travelling a long way). Duration: The length of glider flights depends entirely on the prevailing thermals (currents of warmer air that provide the lift). As a guide your actual time spent gliding should last for between 30 and 40 minutes. Numbers On Day: Your briefing might be shared, your flights will be held on a one-to-one basis with the instructor. Spectators: Spectators are welcome. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy. Dress Code: Wear flat-soled shoes and bring a jumper with you in case it gets cold at higher altitudes. Sunglasses are recommended all year round. Guidelines: From the A377 at Umberleigh follow the road to Exeter to Kingford and turn right up the hill then at the top of the hill turn left onto the B3217. Turn left at the Radar Station towards Ashreigney then after 400 metres, at the crossroads turn right. The closest rail station is Umberleigh. Restrictions: Maximum height is 6’4”. Maximum weight is 17 stone. There is no formal minimum age. You can’t fly if you suffer from epilepsy, fainting or certain other physical or mental disabilities – check when booking. Other Info: The venue operates as a non-profit-making club and you may be asked to help others launch and retrieve their gliders while you wait your turn to glide.
