For a great day out in the Isle of Wight, head to Portsmouth and jump on the fastest ferry service across the Solent on the world’s longest running hovercraft operator in Europe. In just 10 minutes, land on the prime seafront shore at Ryde, full of unspoilt beaches and independent boutique shops. Well-known as England’s largest and second most populous island, IOW is just a few miles out in the English Channel and has long been a popular holiday destination, with a sunny climate, stunning geography and wildlife and the UK’s most popular festivals all housed here. Complete the day with a fine three-course meal (lunch or dinner) at the acclaimed Three Buoys Restaurant (just 10/15 minutes from the harbour), overlooking the beautiful bay of Appley.

Availability: Both the hovercraft and the restaurant operate seven days a week, throughout the year. Weather: Only particularly high winds and swells in the Solent prevent the hovercraft operating, but cancellations are rare. Duration: Hovertravel operate up to 35 departures a day, usually starting at 8.45am, with the latest return from the Isle of Wight at 8.45pm. Three Buoys Restaurant opens at weekdays at midday until 3pm, then re-opens from 6pm (remaining open at weekends).
