Nerves of steel and a stomach of solid rock? Then aerobatic flying is for you. Start with your feet firmly on the ground during a comprehensive briefing – chat through any specific requirements with an instructor, depending on how brave you’re feeling! Then climb aboard a Chipmunk RAF Trainer and once airborne, the pilot instructor puts the plane through its paces – hang on tight for a breathtaking full aerobatic sequence, which might include loops, rolls, stall-turns, wing-overs, barrel rolls, Cuban eights and rolls-off-the-top. The ride can be as stomach-churning or as gentle as you like – it’s up to you. Then if you want to have a go, the instructor hands over the controls so you can experience the thrill of flying a plane.

Availability: Flights take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the season between March and October. Book at least four weeks in advance, even earlier for summer weekend dates. Weather: Aerobatic flying is very weather dependent. It is crucial that you call the venue for a weather check between 8am and 9am please on the day. If your flight is cancelled because of bad weather you’ll be re-booked for an alternative date or time. Duration: Chocks-off to chocks-on flight time is 30 minutes, but please allow for longer at the centre. Numbers On Day: Only you and the pilot will be in the plane. The briefing session may be shared. Spectators: Spectators are welcome. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy – there will be some great photo opportunities with your plane. There’s a restaurant overlooking the field, open from 10am-3pm. Pets are not permitted at the airfield. Dress Code: Wear flat, soft-soled shoes. Any special clothing and headsets will be provided. Bring gloves in cold weather and sunglasses are recommended all year round. Guidelines: From the A377 at Umberleigh follow the signs for Kingford Hill. At the top of the hill turn left onto the B3217 and turn left at the Radar Station. At the crossroads turn right. The closest rail station is Umberleigh. Restrictions: Minimum age is 16. Maximum height is 6’6”. Maximum weight is 17 stone. Other Info: We suggest that you only have a very light meal or don’t eat at all before your flight (a hearty meal beforehand may make you feel nauseous). Similarly, please don’t drink alcohol before you fly – it will make you sick.
