Start with a comprehensive briefing and chat through specific requirements with your instructor so the flight can be tailored to what you want (and how brave you feel). Then don a Biggles-style flying jacket before climbing into the cockpit of a vintage 1930s Stampe SV4 aircraft (a classic Belgian version of the English Tiger Moth) and the model you’ll fly in has been lovingly restored. Feel the rush of the wind from the open cockpit as your pilot puts the plane through a breathtaking aerobatic sequence (subject to weather conditions and at the pilot’s discretion). If you take the controls yourself, discover the sensation that has made generations of flyers fall in love with these great little planes. Receive a flight certificate to take home.
Availability: Wednesdays to Sundays and public holidays throughout the year. Please allow several weeks notice when booking, particularly during the most popular summer months. Weather: Flying is weather dependent and it is crucial that you call the weather line (after 7.30am please) on the day of your flight. The Stampe is an vintage open-cockpit plane and certain weather conditions may result in your flight being rescheduled. Duration: Expect to be on-site for at least an hour and your flight will last for 30 minutes (from chocks-off to chocks-on). Please arrive a few minutes before your flight time to be kitted out and briefed. Numbers On Day: Your briefing may be shared, but only you and your qualified pilot will be in the aircraft during your flight. Spectators: Spectators (including well behaved, supervised children and pets) are welcome. There is an airport restaurant which guests are welcome to use. A camera (not permitted when airborne) and a pair of binoculars will come in handy. Dress Code: Stampes have open cockpits, so wrap up warm. Wear soft-soled shoes, bring sunglasses and tie back long hair. Guidelines: Gloucester Airport is adjacent to junction 11 of the M5. From Cheltenham take the take the Old Gloucester Road (B4063) then turn left into Bamfurlong Lane at the first set of lights and the airport entrance is about 400 yards on the right. If you fit into a standard car seat you should be comfortable in the cockpit. Unsuitable for pregnant women or anyone unable to climb into the open cockpit.
