For a day out in the country, take a drive to Sussex to travel on the famous Bluebell Railway heritage line, then visit Wakehurst Place, the botanical garden country estate of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Start from Sheffield Park station, fully restored to a fine Victorian ambience, before boarding a magnificent steam locomotive which departs three times a day (more on Saturdays) on a picturesque 11 mile route with three further station drop offs, each one emulating the 1940s, 50s or 60s – hop on and off where you wish. Next, head to the botanical splendor of internationally renowned Wakehurst Place (around 20 minutes drive away) which provides a natural feast for the senses, featuring woodland, lakes, formal gardens and more – perfect!

Availability: Seven days a week from April to September, with weekend only runs in October, November and Jan – end of March. During December and New Year’s Day the railway and botanic gardens close. Weather: Duration: Earliest departure from Sheffield Park is 9.45am Saturdays, or 11am weekdays. The latest departure from East Grinstead back to Sheffield Park is 6.15pm Saturdays and 4.45pm weekdays. Wakehurst Place opens at 10am, gardens close 6pm summer/4.30pm winter.
