Description

Can’t decide between flying, driving and sightseeing? Try all three at the IWM Duxford. Begin with a briefing in the control tower, then don a flight jacket for a flying lesson in a genuine De Havilland Tiger Moth, the quintessential English biplane. Pose for a picture with the Tiger Moth, before hitting Duxford’s military testing ground for a driving lesson in an armoured personnel carrier. After a buffet lunch back at the tower, let someone else do the driving on a flight over Cambridge in a De Havilland Dragon Rapide, enjoying unrivalled views over the Fens and the city. A short, private guided tour of Duxford’s aircraft collection includes Spitfires, a B17 and the prototype Concorde. Finish with champagne and a certificate presentation.

Availability: Weekend dates approximately once a month between April and October. Weather: As the Tiger Moth is an open-cockpit plane, certain conditions might mean that the flight is rescheduled or some aerobatic movements aren’t possible. Please call the venue (after 8.30am please) for a weather check before setting off. Duration: The flight lasts about five and a half hours, including approximately 20 minutes in the Tiger Moth. Please arrive 45 minutes before the allotted start time, or call the venue if delayed. Numbers On Day: Share the experience with a maximum of 15 other people. The Tiger Moth flight is held on a one-to-one basis. The museum is very popular and can get busy on summer weekends and school holidays. Spectators: Visitors are welcome and can get half price entry rates to the museum. Please note that all spectators have to enter the museum to watch any take off. Dress Code: Tiger Moths have open cockpits, so wrap up warm. Wear soft-soled shoes. Bring sunglasses and tie back long hair. Flying kit (jacket, headset and helmet) is provided. Guidelines: Duxford is next to junction 10 of the M11 motorway, 48 miles from London, less than half an hour from the M25 and just down the dual carriageway from the A1. Once in the museum, go to the Classic Wings office next to the Control Tower (signposted). The main entrance and Classic Wings office are not close to each other, but there is a free on-site train. Restrictions: Minimum age is 18 and maximum weight is 18 stone. As a guide if you can fit comfortably into a standard size car seat, you will be comfortable in the cockpit. Asthma sufferers may participate. Other Info: Regulations set out by the Civil Aviation Authority can affect your rights in the unlikely event of an accident – full details are available from the venue. MUST take the booking confirmation letter on the day in order to guarantee participation.
